Our Story …

Ben and I are really pleased to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally 2025 - Autumn! We will be driving our shitbox from Canberra to Townsville...'VIA' Silverton & some rough outback roads! Like many of you, we have both lost loved ones to Cancer and this is something we have been wanting to do for a long time in their memories.

Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 15th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but we (like most teams) aim to raise well above this amount. The Autumn 2025 rally target is set at $2,000,000 plus!

These funds go to Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via our facebook page @Wacky Wheels Adventures

Don't forget to write who you are donating for... we will write their name or your message on the car to take with us!

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

<p>Introducing our shitbox! </p><p></p><p>Ben comes home from work on a Monday afternoon delighted saying "I've brought a car, do you want to come for a drive to get it. Should be a quick pick up, 30minutes tops!" </p><p></p><p>Of course, I agree. We hook the trailer up and set out for the 'quick pick up'. </p><p></p><p>On the way there, Ben shows me the messages between himself and the seller. </p><p>"Its got a serious knock but that could be anything, its still running. Missing a door and guard but its only $500 so lets give it a go" he says. </p><p></p><p>We arrive to a bit of a car graveyard with the Wagon buried at the back. The car turns over and while we are in Canberra, the knock in this engine could have been heard from Yass. She was loud....but not for very long. Two turn overs of the engine and a couple of quick remixed editions of "that's an unhealthy engine" plays before silence. The knock proved too much and the engine has seized - giving us absolutely nothing but the sounds of "should we continue" playing in our heads. </p><p></p><p>You guessed it - completely unprepared we continued. Fast forward through using one soccer mum van, a very thin ratchet strap and some "woohah, yup, left hand down, straight, your clear, shit that crack doesn't sound good, hold up, nar yeah its fine, you got a couple inch's clearance on this side, is this going to work, all clear, send it, geeez would you look at that, how did that strap not snap" commentary - ITS FREE and on the road ready to winch onto the trailer. With completely flat tires and an 'only just' battery the winch needed a payrise after completing that job. </p><p></p><p>After almost an hour in the dark freezing our butts off in 0 degrees, we had our shitbox on the trailer. Locked and loaded ready for its new adventure. </p><p></p><p>"See easy one" Ben said on the way home as we both laughed. </p><p></p><p>We brought it home. Taped up the door and ran for the heat inside the house, wondering what we had gotten ourselves into....</p>

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$50 million over the past 15 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

  • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
  • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
  • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
